Modern Meadow Has Arrived!

alternative text

Of course, to anyone who is reading this post, the announcement of Joel’s new line, Modern Meadow, being available is not new information. We’re running a little late. Again. To be honest, we were caught a little off guard when the collection started shipping in February because we thought it wasn’t going to be ready until May. Oops.

So, being that we are embarrassingly late in sharing the news of Modern Meadow and that we have obviously neglected this blog since it’s feeble introduction almost seven months ago, we would like to redeem ourselves with some new patterns and a giveaway, with the hope that you will continue to visit our now truly functioning blog.

The “Picnic Throw” pictured below is so cute (my word, not Joel’s) that I couldn’t wait to start working on it. And, just as I imagined, making this throw was sewing bliss for someone who doesn’t quite consider herself a “quilter” just yet. However, my bliss ended when Joel asked if I could hand-quilt it to give it more of a vintage look. I laughed because I thought he was joking. He wasn’t. (After 13 years of marriage, you would think I might know when he’s joking and when he’s not, but he still surprises me.)

After I had written off Joel’s ridiculous request, I decided that maybe it wouldn’t be that bad. Let me assure you, IT WAS. Had it not been for the ridiculous amount of time I logged watching T.V. in the month of February, I would never have finished. So, if you get the hair-brained idea to hand quilt this throw as I did, remember my warning and just let the machine do the work.

Time did not allow for me to take on the much more intricate “Sunny Day Quilt”, so we are grateful for Ellen Maxwell who did, and who did an amazing job! This quilt makes me happy, but then so does everything about the entire Modern Meadow collection. We hope it makes you happy too.

Speaking of happiness, we think a give-away, or three might just make a few people’s day. How about a collection of fat quarters of Modern Meadow in each color-way? And, hey, while we’re at it we’ll send each of the lucky winners one of the fabric birds that are featured in Joel’s new book “Sewn Spaces”, which hits stores in May.

Ahhhh, we can feel spring just right around the corner. Or at least we thought we could until it snowed this past weekend and flared our spring fever even more dramatically. After having lived in Florida for seven years, we are accustomed to preparing idyllic Easter egg hunts for our children in bright, sunny, warm weather. It was a bit of an adjustment for us to sprint through the yard in the freezing cold on Saturday to help the kids find the eggs as quickly as possible and retreat inside 10 minutes later.

So, until it warms up here, we’re hoping you are experiencing a much warmer spring. Regardless of the weather though, Modern Meadow is sure to brighten your day, especially if you get some of it for free, right? Just leave us a comment about your favorite part of spring and we’ll announce the winners next week!

Learned something new today -- you have a blog and used to live in Florida. I'm a Florida native and the high pollen count means all the trees are blooming. I love Joel's fabrics and like your handquilted throw:-))
Please enter me in your giveaway. Thank you. mlwright29 (at) hotmail (dot) com

My favorite part of Spring is the the daily changes of the buds on the trees and how all of a sudden (it seems) the tree is full of leaves.
Thanks for sharing your new line of fabric - it's lovely.

Yup, I found you via QuiltDad, too! I'm a huge fan--Chestnut Hill is one of my all-time favorite collections, and the new Modern Meadow is outstanding!

My favorite part of spring is the first scent of lilac. It brings me right back to childhood, when I had bushes just under my window and for a few weeks, fell asleep to their scent every evening.

I have many favorite things about spring but currently my most favorite is the sound of the birds...so cheery and alive! :) Your little birds in the photo are quite cute!! :) Happy spring. I look forward to trying modern meadow soon!

I'm so glad I followed Quilt Dad's link to your site; what wonderful fabrics, and fun stories of life! Where i live, spring is usually foggy or windy, and cold! Today, however, is a lovely, warm day, and I need to get out there!
Wishing myself luck to win!

I love it when the flowers start to bloom, crocuses, daffodils and tulips. Wonderful colors everywhere, after the winter greys. And that special smell of spring in the air, difficult to describe, but suddenly one day it's there when you come outside.

My favorite thing about spring is the blooming that happens. WIth the trees, the flowers, the kids. Everything blosoms!

Well this spring my favorite part will be Modern Meadow! But springs past the best part is seeing the trees beginning to bud, I love to see the little white and pink flowers with little snippets of green against a drab mass of bare branches.... it's like a little tease of what is to come. ;)

My favorite parts of spring are redbuds in bloom, open windows and being able to put my little boys out in the backyard after a long winter indoors!

Susana said...

Blooms, of course. Big magnolia blooms and tiny redbud ones, and even tinier ones on the greengage tree, whispering about late summer.
And the ones on the dresses that can't wait to come out for a spin.

Thanks for the giveaway, and all the great fabric.

My favorite part of spring is going in the garden each morning to see what has grown from the day before and see it change before my eyes everyday!

Kara said...

I LOVE the birds-they make me think of the little family of robins who always seem to make their nest in the corner of our deck. My boys look forward to that every year, and it truly signifies the coming of spring.

Gorgeous fabrics, how exciting! Yesterday I sat out on a bench in the courtyard off our kitchen in the blazing sunshine hand quilting my daughter, Eve's, quilt - for me spring cannot get better than, sunshine, a bench and a sneaky bit of quilting!

Wendz said...

So glad I found you (via Stephanie's blog)! The best part of spring is all the babies i.e. new buds, new leaves, little birds twittering in their nests! I love the way you made the little birds to show off the colourways of your new design range and if the book contains more of the fab designs like the cushion then someone is going to be a very lucky winner.

Beautiful fabrics, there is no question about it! Congratulations!
I just love seeing the first green breaking through the earth and putting a color into the brown grey leftover winter mood. The smells and the birds singing, sleeping with open window, soon no heating any longer, and last but not least: new spring collections in fabrics and other material. Living in Michigan, I generally love that we do have seasons! Change is good - it makes you appreciate things more. Thanks so much & Happy Spring!

I'd love to throw my name in the hat! My favorite part of spring is when the weather is perfectly cool and breezy, the windows are open, and the birds are chirping.

Ryan said...

Friend and fellow male quilter John sent me to your giveaway! Thanks for helping us celebrate Spring by giving away bundles of your new line Modern Meadow.

My favorite Spring time event is when the bulbs start peeking their way through the soil in our garden. The Winters in our area are so hard that it's honestly a miracle that those fragile plants re-appear without fail year after year.

Joanne said...

My favourite part of spring? That would be the light, the extra light that starts to creep into the last corners of the day, imperceptibly at first, until you realise that last week when you took your walk home it was dusk and this week it is very much light. That very real emergence from the darkness of winter is the best part of spring bar none.

So glad I found your blog, and not just for the giveaway (though that is very welcome).

Love the new fabric, and beautiful photos of the projects. Joel's new book is definately on my must-buy list (I blogged about it a while ago). Anyways, my favorite part of spring? It would have to be either the jasmine blooming (which smells SO good) or the beautiful lavender plants in my front yard.

Thank you QuiltDad for sending me over. I live in Northern New York State so spring is EVERYTHING to us here. It signifies the end of a long cold season with the promise of the birds returning, backyard barbecues and camping out under the stars. I love your fabrics, every single one and even when we camp, I make sure to bring something along fabric related, whether hand or machine, so I can get my "fix".

Found this blog through another. You guys are amazing! I've. Enjoyed reading.

My favorite part of sping is the smell. I love being able to crack a window at night and feel the slight chill and that fresh scent. It reminds me of sleepovers at my grammies when I was little, curled up under her vintage daisy sheets, falling asleep to the sound and smell of the breeze.

Spring: the best part is putting away the winter coat. Second best: daffodils and crocuses peeking through the snow. Third best is working in the quilting room with the windows open!

What I like about Spring....

Living here in the "fruit bowl" of California, we can drive by row after row of gorgeous white and pink blossoms on the peach, pear and plum trees in the local orchards.

The blooming Crepe Myrtle trees/bushes that line the streets.

The crisp, clean air, the bright, green grass, and the clean plants after the first rain of the the season washes all the dust/dirt away.

I love these fabrics - they do make me happy and make me smile. Being a hand quilter - I'd love to do the heirloom or picnic quilt - either one would thrill me.

My favorite thing about spring is when the flowers begin to bloom - living in high desert country - the colors of spring are a great relief from the rest of the year.
