<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I'm just a few days late announcing the winners of our Botanique giveaway. Sorry about that. We had a fabric blowout sale at the end of last week and unexpectedly sold our home at the same time! It got a bit crazy around here to say the least. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So, here are the two <u><b>LUCKY</b></u> ladies who have won a Botanique fat quarter bundle:</span><br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Speaking of <u><b>LUCK</b></u>, we are still trying to wrap our brains around the fact that we sold our home in one day! Who does that?! Now we just have to figure out how we're going to manage the next few months! It's going to be interesting preparing for Quilt Market while we pack up this place...wish us <u><b>LUCK</b></u>!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I sewed a little something out of Botanique today! I had to remind myself that I actually can sew, AND complete a project once in a while. Feels good! Although, I can't take credit for the cute bag. Our good friend, Jessica sewed this for us to show off some of Joel's prints. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Once again I have had a long absence from this blog. One of these days I will be a blogging fool though. Seriously. Joel has amazing things in store in the next few months, so keep watching. You will not want to miss his newest line coming out late spring. Just two words might peak the interest of so many people who contact us on a weekly basis for a particular print: "Antler Damask". I will let that teaser sit with you for the time being...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Until then, our friends over at <a href="http://www.creativebug.com/">www.creativebug.com</a> have posted the workshop we created with them for our Farmer's Market Tote. Head on over to their site and check it out. You'll probably find a new internet addiction with all of their incredible workshops. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Had I thought things through before now, I would have asked for this bag to be sent back before now so I could take it on vacation next week. Darn! It would be perfect for a carry-on bag for the plane. </span><br />

We were unable to attend because we were just coming off of a 10-day vacation and family reunion in Florida. **Sigh** We had a wonderful time spending time with Joel's family and seeing some of our favorite places in Central Florida. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">We spent a perfect weekend at Cocoa Beach, where we all wish we could return now that there is snow on the ground here in Utah!</span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1pHzh2ESvlaaUOWzbb697It4PiQyVlFpGdgLbEFI5zPvpjCjdOWfVRowzqwj083rLEH93ddU2ukzOZbWqa7VrOH8M9a7WUBDxOvemV8gV0G2gPgRgDyxxTvErT53pwWB0vK94_S1DouQ/s1600/family_ocean_BW.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1pHzh2ESvlaaUOWzbb697It4PiQyVlFpGdgLbEFI5zPvpjCjdOWfVRowzqwj083rLEH93ddU2ukzOZbWqa7VrOH8M9a7WUBDxOvemV8gV0G2gPgRgDyxxTvErT53pwWB0vK94_S1DouQ/s400/family_ocean_BW.jpg" width="400" /></a></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Aside from the beach, every member of our family agrees that the Harry Potter World at Universal Islands of Adventure is our very favorite attraction at any theme park we've visited! I can almost taste the Butter Beer just thinking about how good it is!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">But back to the fabric. Introducing "Botanique" was the original intent of this post. These beautiful prints will be available in January in both the "Fountain" and "Golden Hour" colorways. </span> <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Kari Sweeten is offering another giveaway of Bungalow fat quarters over at <a href="http://www.u-createcrafts.com/2013/10/sponsored-giveaway-joel-dewberry.html">Ucreate</a> if you're interested in trying again. </span></div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I'm a little obsessed with these prints. Truly. I would change
the entire decor scheme of my house to work with this collection if I
had the time and money. I did though finish a major project a couple of
weeks ago, using the Cotton Sateen <a href="http://www.joeldewberry.com/pages/bungalow-bramble-cotton-sateen-home-decor">Doily print</a>
in Forest. I redid our kitchen nook table and chairs and LOVE how
everything turned out. It was a painstaking process to sand everything,
paint and reupholster the chairs, and stain the table, but so worth the
result. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I didn't take the best "before" shot, but this will give you an idea of the transformation that took place:</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Part of what motivated me to complete this makeover was the knowledge that <a href="http://creativebug.com/">creativebug.com</a>
was coming to film a video at our home last week. There is nothing like
the idea of having your home serve as the location for a photo or film
shoot to prompt some serious makeover magic! We also spent some time
sprucing up the studio space, and love the results there as well.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I realize I'm a little slow in posting about Bungalow. It would be an understatement to say it's been a while since I last posted on this blog. When Joel was in the process of
updating the website several weeks ago he casually looked up at me
and said, “Wow. Did you know it's been two years since you last updated the blog?” Then, before I could defend my utterly neglectful work status,
he looked over at our 18-month-old son, Landon and said, “And that would be the reason why.”</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Yep. Having child number five
completely upended my world for the past two years. I'm just now feeling like I might
finally be able to manage adding back in some regular work hours that
don't consist of all things child-rearing or housekeeping.</span><br />

Aside from the awkward three-hour-long introduction of Joel (really, when the announcer just kept going and going, Joel and I were getting a bit embarrassed), we had a blast acting like we knew what we were doing as judges. The event was put on by the faculty and students of the Family and Consumer Sciences Education Department, and each of the student designers was given the challenge to create an outfit from recyclable materials. Wow! We were so impressed with their level of creativity.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">We were invited to sit on the judging panel by Lindsey Shirley, Utah State University FCS Teacher Educator, because she and her students love using Joel's fabrics in their creative projects, but also because she wanted judges who place family as a huge priority in their lives. And, seeing as how Joel and I are expecting our fifth child in about six months, we certainly fit that description!</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Here we are pictured with Dr. Shirley and a couple of her students:</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 308px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Fashion_show_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">We were asked to choose a winner for each of the four seasons of the year, and one "Best of the Year" designer. I didn't think about getting photos of the winners until everyone was on their way out of the ballroom after the show, but I did manage to catch three quickly snapped photos of a few of the winners:</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Our favorite for winter was the "Inspired by the Movies" dress, created out of movie posters and film tape. </span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 547px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Movie_dress_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I couldn't find the winners for the spring and summer seasons, so you won't get to see the creativity that went into designing an outfit with beach towels and stuffed animals, and the other with a cowboy boot bodice and button-up shirt skirt.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I personally had two favorites for fall, but the consensus among the judges was the "Goldmine" dress, made out of paper bags:</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 547px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Golden_dress_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">And finally, the dress that absolutely stunned me when it was displayed on the catwalk was this "Dollar Store Bride" created out of coffee filters, tulle, fabric and broken up CD's. I wish I had taken just a moment longer to get a better shot. This design won the overall "Best of the Year" award. </span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 916px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Bride%27s_dress_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I was so hesitant to agree to do this event with Joel because I am not a fashion guru, but I'm so glad I went. (and a little bit of progress)<span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Today is the first day of school for our kids, and I'm just a little bit thrilled by everything I've been able to accomplish today. I mean, I miss the kiddos, but it was time for us all to have a little separation from each other. </span>
<br />
<br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">As happy as I am to have everyone on a routine once again (and to have some time to think), I am lamenting the end of summer for one reason: I didn't get nearly the amount of creative projects accomplished that I had envisioned. Granted, I had a rather ambitious list that was pretty unrealistic, but I only managed to cross off one big project. I refinished a cabinet for our daughter's bedroom. Seriously, the thing took me all summer! I just couldn't ever seem to find a big chunk of time to work on it. </span>
<br />
<br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Here is what it looked like before:</span>
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;">
<br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 616px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Cabinet_before_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" />
<br /></div>
<br />
<br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">And this is what it looks like now:</span>
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;">
<br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 575px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Cabinet_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" />
<br /></div>
<br />
<br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I especially love Joel's Aviary II Damask print in the background and the new knobs from Anthropologie:</span>
<br />
<br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;">
<br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/cabinet_knobs_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" />
<br /></div>
<br />
<br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Maybe one of these days I'll actually have the entire bedroom decorated, but there is still a lot to cross off on my list. </span>
<br />
<br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">But really, you probably didn't care to read about my lack of summer productivity and were more concerned with finding out if you were chosen as one of the pattern winners, so here is the list of our lucky winners!:</span>
<br />
<br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"> #18 Angela: Vintage Flutter Dress</span>
<br />

<br />

<br /></div>
<br /><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">Joel and I have been "missing in action" on this blog for a while. I wish we had some really good excuse, like “we spent the last two months on vacation in Hawaii”, or “we’ve been spending all of our extra time reading classical literature to our children”, or “we’ve been revamping our entire website, printing patterns, and finishing our studio space.”</span>
<br />
<br />Actually, that last one is true. We’ve been extremely busy, just not visibly so here on the blog. I’ve also been going through a weird nesting phase during the past month or so. Every room in the house is getting a major deep-cleaning and reorganization makeover. Maybe I’ll post photos in the near future once I’m completely done.</span>
<br />
<br /><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">At the time of Quilt Market we promised to post the pattern and instructions for the Heirloom Quilt; it's finally up in the sidebar for download. I think this is my favorite quilt design of Joel’s. In fact, I’m making another one out of the Sapphire collection for our daughter Kirsten’s soon-to-be-made-over room. I’m really excited to get started in there!</span>
<br />
<br /><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">With the new studio space almost complete, the website up and going, and patterns shipping we (and when I say “we”, I’m really saying “I”) should hopefully be more consistent in posting here because I have a lot of fun post ideas in store!</span>
<br />
<br /><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">And, to celebrate the renewal of our blogging activity and our </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://joeldewberry.com/">new sewing patterns</a><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">, we'd like to give away one of each pattern, like the fabulous Empire Maxi Dress shown below. Leave a comment to be entered for the giveaway, and we'll announce the winners some time next week! </span>

I've spent the past three days trying to regain some order in what morphed into a disaster of a home over the past month. Never before have I left our house in such a state when we've gone out of town; I mean aside from dumping the garbage and loading the dirty dishes in the dishwasher, I left everything else a complete disaster. Seriously. As glad as I was to walk into our own home Sunday evening, there was a part of me that still wanted to be sitting in the beautifully-decorated, mess-free booth at Market.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Our bedroom/sewing room/my office/kids' video gaming room (this overwhelming mess of a multipurpose room will be remedied as soon as the basement is finished) has yet to be completely dug out, but if I wait to resume my work until then, I'll never post about Market. So, I'm going to do my best to condense what was a very busy four days into a succinct Quilt Market recap.</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">First things first, here is our lovely booth:</span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Booth_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />Even after having watched as Joel created it from beginning to end over the past couple of months, first on his computer and then in real life, I was still stunned with how amazing it looked at Market. It was definitely worth all the effort after seeing everyone's reactions to the booth.</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Here is one of the chairs Joel reupholstered for the show. I'm changing the entire decorating scheme in our living room just so I can make it work in there. I've got some work to do:</span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Blockprint_blossom_chair_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />Here is the other chair he reupholstered TWO DAYS before the show! Yeah, that caused just a bit of stress, especially when Joel almost impaled his finger with the staple gun:</span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Citrine_Chair_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />This is the flower arrangement that garnered much attention. We kept getting asked what the draping greenery was called, but had no clue until Amy Butler informed us it was "Heirloom Amaranth". I guess our florist really was paying attention to our booth theme. Cool.<br /><br /></span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Flowers_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />We are thrilled that this collection of fabric includes the laminate substrate. This is the Farmer's Market tote from Joel's book. I can't wait to use it for all of our pool outings this summer:<br /><br /></span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Pool_bag_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />This is the quilt Joel designed for the Heirloom collection, using the Ruby colorway. The pattern will be available for download very soon:<br /><br /></span> <img style="width: 410px; height: 577px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Quilt_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /><br />I loved modeling a new outfit made from Heirloom prints each day. This Empire Maxi dress in the Ruby colorway was my most favorite!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 570px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Me&Joel_Market_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />And, the Empire Maxi Dress is just one of the five new patterns we debuted at the show. All of them will ship July 1st!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Patterns_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /><br />We loved having Kim and Kris from <a href="http://www.thediydish.com/">DIY Dish</a> and Daria from <a href="http://www.boutiquecafe.com/home/">Boutique Cafe</a> stop by to film a segment in our booth. <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Kris_Kim&Daria_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />My very favorite part of those four days was meeting so many incredible people. In the six years that Joel has designed for Freespirit and Westminster Fabrics, this was my first time meeting the people who work there. Joel and I were both flattered when four of the Westminster ladies were wearing outfits made out of his Heirloom prints on the first day of the show; what a fantastic team to be working with!</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /><br />Our booth neighbor was </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://markcesarik.blogspot.com/">Mark Cesarik</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, the newest designer for Freespirit. Mark and his wife Cara were hilarious and kept us entertained during the slow moments of the show. Regrettably, I failed to get a photo with them, so I hope they don't mind me stealing this one from their blog.</span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 269px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Mark&Cara.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />In fact, I failed to take very many photos at all. I don't know what happened to my normal photo-happy self. I guess it was too much to think about when we had so many other people snapping photos of the booth and us all day long.</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /><br />I enjoyed meeting all of the designers under the Westminster umbrella, including </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/">Amy Butler</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.annamariahorner.com/">Anna Maria Horner</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://tulapink.com/">Tula Pink</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.erinmc.com/">Erin McMorris</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.sisboom.com/blog/">Jennifer Paganelli</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, and </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.valoriwells.com/">Valori Wells</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">. I mean WOW! What a talented group of people.</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /><br />I have to say though, meeting all of the wonderful people who stopped by our booth was the most rewarding part of the show. Watching them react to Joel's designs with such a positive, and sometimes outright melodramatic way, was so entertaining. I especially loved the ladies who were starstruck upon meeting Joel for the first time. I think my favorite reaction was that of Jamie, one of the employees from </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.thematerialgirlsquilts.blogspot.com/">Material Girls</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, a local quilt shop.</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">She just stood there gaping for almost a full minute and kind of looked like she was about to cry. </span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /><br />Joel and I also loved spending a few moments talking with John Adams of <a href="http://www.quiltdad.com/">Quilt Dad</a>, <a href="http://www.sandihendersondesign.com/">Sandi Henderson</a>, Liesel and Todd from <a href="http://www.oliverands.com/">Oliver + S</a>, Amy Callaway from </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.thebelleandthebeau.com/">thebelleandthebeau</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, Chelsea Anderson from </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.pinkfigpatterns.com/">Pink Fig Patterns</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, Charlie and Lindsay Prezzano from </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/">Hawthorne Threads</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, Corinne from </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.persnicketyclothing.com/">Persnickety Clothing</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"> and on and on.</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /><br />The team from the </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.thequiltbarn.com/">Quilt Barn</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"> in Kimberly, Idaho were also a lot of fun. In the end, they even convinced Joel and I to sell the Citrine Empire Maxi dress (pictured in the background below) to their shop owner so she could wear it during her trip to France in two weeks. We tried to convince her that if the dress was going, Joel and I needed to go as well. No such luck though.<br /><br /></span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Booth_table_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />Before leaving for the show, I had the erroneous idea that by being away from our children, the weekend would be somewhat relaxing for Joel and I and make up for all the dateless weeks prior to our leaving. I had images of romantic dinners out, maybe a walk around Temple Square, catching a movie together, but we were so exhausted most evenings that we just collapsed from exhaustion after dinner and called it a night.</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /><br />We were fortunate to slip away for a couple of hours though on Thursday evening and watch our son play in a soccer game that just happened to be the only game of the season scheduled in downtown Salt Lake. We had only been gone one day, but when we walked over to the game and saw him, my heart tugged in my chest because I already missed our kids so much. His team won the game, the weather was perfect and Joel and I grabbed take-out from Macaroni Grill for dinner...and then some Olive Garden for dessert. It was a perfect night.</span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Soccer_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />Well, I thought I could keep this succinct, but there was just too much I wanted to include. I loved my first Quilt Market and the fact that Joel and got to be there together this time. </span><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /></div></span>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com210tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-40281234417935529192011-05-07T16:11:00.004-06:002011-07-25T02:16:42.027-06:00Family Photo Shoot<span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I'm somewhat obsessed with family pictures. I make my family endure this tradition at least twice a year, and I'm pretty sure it drives them crazy. So, I consider it a huge feat when I can manage to pull off a successful photo shoot. I'm so happy with how our photos turned out, thanks to our photographer </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.jessicasphoto.com/">Jessica</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, who was extremely patient with our not-so-cooperative three-year-old and super-squinty seven-year-old.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I had a vision for this photo months ago, but am still surprised we actually pulled it off. I have my friend Jill to thank for sewing the girls' skirts (this is the Junior Meadow Spirit Skirt pattern) and Amy at </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.thebelleandthebeau.com/">thebelleandthebeau.com</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"> for sewing the awesome ties for Joel and the boys. I sewed the Vintage Flutter Dress in the Sapphire colorway for myself. I was pretty pleased with my handiwork until I went to sit down and the zipper split open at the bottom. Oops. It's a good thing Jessica and my family were the only ones around to witness that little embarrassment.</span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Family_on_couch_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Holding_hands_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/joel_&_girls_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />Joel thought it was kind of dorky that I made him and Carson pull their ties out of their sweaters, but I wanted Amy to see how great they looked!</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Joel&boys_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Kids_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Me&Girls.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />We're making our final preparations for Quilt Market this weekend. I'd like to say we're completely ready and that we'll be able to enjoy a relaxing Mother's Day together tomorrow, but we still have a long list of items to check off. And unfortunately, I woke up with a sore throat and headache today, and our 7-year-old woke up with a fever and stomachache. Pretty awesome. I guess the timing could be worse, but now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that Joel's immune system is strong enough to fend off all the germs, at least until Market is over.<br />Until then...</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-5057750454514352672011-04-26T07:04:00.009-06:002011-07-25T02:18:05.518-06:00Pattern Preview<span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I can't believe Quilt Market is in TWO WEEKS! I'm getting really excited, especially after the progress we made this past week and seeing how everything is coming together. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">This will be my first experience ever attending and I've been peppering Joel with question after question. My queries have had anything to do with the setup and school house before the show begins to what to expect during the show and whether or not he'll be embarrassed when he introduces my tongue-tied self to </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.annamariahorner.com/">Anna Maria Horner</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"> or </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/products/">Amy Butler</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">. Just kidding on that last one. I'm sure I'll be completely cool and composed.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">As I mentioned, this was a very productive week for us, thanks to the help of a few very talented friends who helped us out with sewing, watching our kids, modeling and editing pattern instructions. We will be introducing 5 sewing patterns at the show and had our friend, Angie model the two dresses for us. She was such a sport to put up with Joel and I as we directed her every movement during two different shoots. We feel fortunate that both shoots worked out so well because the weather was insane! A torrent of sleet and rain would be falling one minute and then it would be sunny and calm ten minutes later. </span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-style: italic;">The "Vintage Flutter Dress" in Ruby</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span></span><i><br /></i><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Vintage_dress_ruby_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-style: italic;">The "In Flight Hobo Bag" and "Vintage Flutter Dress" in Citrine</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span></span><i><br /></i><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/In_flight_hobo_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-style: italic;">The "Empire Maxi Dress" in Sapphire</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span></span><i><br /></i><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Empire_maxi_dress_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">By the way, I did get my way with the family photo shoot on Easter. I feel kind of badly that I resorted to using Mother's Day as the crowning piece to my convincing argument. As soon as I mentioned that all I wanted for Mother's Day was a beautiful family portrait to hang in our living room, he acquiesced. I can't wait to see how the images turned out, even though our three-year-old was more interested in sticking out his tongue than smiling. </span><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">As soon as I have them, I will post some images from the shoot so you can see the "Junior Meadow Spirit Skirt" pattern. All of the patterns will be available in June.<br /><br />I'm off to make some double-welt cording for the GORGEOUS chair Joel has covered in the green Blockprint Blossom from the Sapphire colorway. It has inspired an entirely new design scheme for our living room.<br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-17574186463885142902011-04-08T10:36:00.007-06:002011-07-25T02:18:52.424-06:00It's a VOILE-i-day!<span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Despite the fact that I'm so ticked off because it's snowing again, my spirit is soaring. Our advance yardage of Heirloom in the voile substrates showed up on the doorstep this morning, and oh-my-goodness, I'm about to thrust myself into a sewing frenzy! This stuff is absolutely gorgeous, and will look so stunning in the two dress patterns we will be releasing next month at Quilt Market.</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">My head is spinning right now with all kinds of ideas for these prints. I've never actually sewn anything with voile, and now that I have 12 3-yard cuts of this luscious fabric, I know it's not enough for everything I want to do. But, if I have my way, there WILL at least be a family photo shoot (yes Joel, just embrace the experience) with us all dressed in our Easter best, which for this year will include ties, dresses and skirts made out of the voile and cotton prints in the Sapphire colorway. Oooohhh, I can't wait!</span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 274px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Sapphire_voile_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I guess you'll find out whether my persuasive powers will be enough to successfully convince Joel and our four children to cooperate with my photo-shoot plans. If so, I'll be sure to post the results!</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Until then, I'm hoping we will soon see blossoms outside rather than snow.</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 306px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Perfect_blossoms_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-4940369967617639122011-03-26T16:36:00.008-06:002011-07-25T02:20:08.191-06:00March Madness (and a sneak peak!)<span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I'm sure like most Americans, you're at least familiar with "March Madness", if not full out obsessed. But what about "Modern Madness", the fabric lover's version of bracket competition? If you haven't seen this yet, make a visit to </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://fatquarterly.com/blog">Fat Quarterly</a> <span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">to see what form of March Madness they have going on.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Joel and I are flattered that the voters have chosen Joel's Modern Meadow collection to advance to the "Sweet 16". We feel pretty good about our chances to move to the Elite 8. But then, we felt pretty good about BYU's chances to advance from the Sweet 16, only to watch their dream season come to a brutal end against Florida the other night. And to see Jimmer take such a beating...that was tough to watch.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">We don't watch a lot of sports on T.V. at our house, which is probably a good thing. I was so tense and on edge during the game that I could hardly respond to anyone without a snappy tone, and in some cases, didn't even hear when someone was talking to me because I was so focused on the game. Joel's not sure he'll let me watch another sporting event on television in the future. I don't think he's seen that side of me in the 13+ years we've been married. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Anyway, last week I promised you a sneak peak of Joel's new Heirloom collection. After waiting impatiently for our advance yardage to arrive, I was pretty darn excited when two large boxes arrived Thursday afternoon filled with pretty piles of fabric.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">So here you go; three vibrant colorways of a stunning collection of classic-modern prints in cotton, cotton sateen and, for our first time, voile and laminated substrates!</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(153, 0, 0);">RUBY<br /><br /></span><img style="width: 410px; height: 535px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Ruby_collection_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><span style="color: rgb(102, 51, 102);"><span style="font-weight: bold;">SAPPHIRE<br /><br /></span></span><img style="width: 410px; height: 531px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Sapphire_collection_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><span style="color: rgb(102, 204, 204);"><span style="font-weight: bold;">CITRINE<br /><br /></span></span><img style="width: 410px; height: 550px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Citrine_Collection_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Please wish Joel and me (especially me, as I don't handle stress as well as he does) a productive 6 weeks of designing and sewing before we head to Market in Salt Lake. </span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com25tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-42083671858470278432011-03-19T17:15:00.008-06:002011-07-25T02:21:32.999-06:00Aviary 2 In Flight!<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Aviary 2 is on it's way, and will be arriving in stores any day now! The collection features a combination of some of the most popular designs from the Aviary, Ginseng and Deer Valley lines in three new color palettes; </span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Lilac, Granite and Saffron.<br /><br /><br /></span><img style="width: 410px; height: 639px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/lilac.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /><br /></div><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 639px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/granite.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 639px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/saffron.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /><br /><br />As soon as our nine-year-old saw the Lilac color palette, she had her heart set on having these prints decorate what will soon be her very own bedroom. To be honest, once I had the fabric in hand, I wanted to redecorate the whole house with these prints because they make me so happy. For me, these prints scream "Spring", and I am so excited for winter to be behind us. <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /><br />So, while the basement is currently under construction to give us two more bedrooms, a design studio, a family room and a kitchen, I set to work on creating some bedding for Brooke's new room, using The Pendant Quilt pattern (available for download on the side bar) that Joel designed.<br /><br /><br /></span><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Quilt_photo_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Aviary_quilt_close_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I also created this throw pillow out of the Plum Damask print decorated with a swath of hand-made ribbon roses. Her room is going to be so sophisticated and pretty. I can't wait to see the end result because I have a few more projects planned to finish out the space. </span><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Rose_pillow_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Rose_pillow_Close-up_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /><br /></div>However, home decorating projects will have to be put on hold for a little while as Joel and I are currently up to our eyeballs with preparations for Quilt Market. Check back soon for a sneak peak of Joel's new "Heirloom" collection, and some of the patterns we will debut in Salt Lake this May. You're going to swoon over these seriously gorgeous prints. I promise.<br /><br />On Monday evening you can see Joel with the crafting divas, Kris and Kim of <a href="http://www.thediydish.com/">DIY Dish</a> for the first episode of season 3.<br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com146tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-47848259279626282312011-01-18T13:40:00.008-07:002011-07-25T02:23:18.138-06:00Organized...Finally<span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">It has taken me three weeks into the New Year, but I finally feel organized, or at least as organized as I'm going to get. I have a perfectionist problem. I can't seem to sit down and get any work done on this blog (obviously) or any other design-related projects because I want my house to be perfectly clean, my children to have all their homework completed, my laundry all folded and put away, my errands run, my dinner prepared...but, seeing as how all these things are NEVER done at the same time, I've decided to put some of them off to get work done that actually stays done. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Like most people, I sit down at the beginning of every year and write out a list of resolutions, most of which I fail miserably at achieving. On the other hand, Joel rarely, if ever, writes out New Yew Year's resolutions because he says he's always in the process of making and working on goals and doesn't need the start of a new year to get him motivated. He's definitely a "Highly Effective Person". I know because I recently read Stephen R. Covey's book so that I can become one as well.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">In order to do that, I've determined I needed a more inspiring workspace. I've had a vision in my mind of what I wanted my creative work space to look like for a year, but have had little time to actually make it happen because I was trying to do it all by myself. Then I found some talented individuals to help me out and now my space is almost complete.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">One of my favorite collections of Joel's is Deer Valley in Azure, so that became the inspiration for my space:</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Inspiration_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">The bulletin board was made by Angie Maxfield</span><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, a niece of a friend of mine. I LOVE IT! I had temporarily placed a plain cork board on the wall above my desk until I saw Angie's magnetic boards and knew one of them would be perfect for this space. </span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Magnetic_baord_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I love the old fork Angie bent and curled to use for a picture-holder magnet. Angie doesn't have a website yet, so if you'd like to contact her, please email her at bittyvintage@gmail.com:</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/fork_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">A couple of years ago Joel partnered with </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://madisonparkgroup.com/_products/results.php?category_id=21">The Madison Park Group</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"> to create these iPop magnets using his Deer Valley artwork. The line has since been discontinued, but they will be using some of Joel's Spring 2011 designs for a new collection of magnets. </span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 277px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Magnets_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Once in a while I like to peruse Etsy to see what kinds of items are being created out of Joel's fabrics. I'm not sure this is a healthy activity for me because my jealousy sometimes gets the best of me and I wonder why I wasn't creative enough to come up with such clever ideas. Take for instance this ironing board cover I stumbled across. It was made by </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/58753683/ironing-board-cover-dogwood-in-lake?ref=sr_list_4&ga_search_query=joel+dewberry%2C+ironing+board+covers&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=&order=&includes[0]=tags&includes[1]=title&filter[0]=handmade">Paula at Compelled to Craft</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">:</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/ironing_board_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I found a second ironing board cover made by </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/57685148/stunning-ironing-board-cover-made-with?ref=sr_list_3&ga_search_query=joel+dewberry%2C+ironing+board+covers&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=&order=&includes[0]=tags&includes[1]=title&filter[0]=handmade">Jamie and Carmen at CityChicCountryMouse</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">, and ordered one from them as well to switch it out with the other one from time to time. They included this cute, little pincushion to match:</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Pincushion_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Finally, this corduroy bag was created by Jessica at </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.fresh-tomatoes.blogspot.com/">www.fresh-tomatoes.blogspot.com</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">. She just happened upon a booth we did for a local art show in 2009 and couldn't believe Joel and I had recently moved to the same small town where she grew up. We were happy to swap fabric for some of her adorable bags:</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: trebuchet ms;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Corduroy_bag_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">So, thank you ladies for helping me create a more organized workspace. Now that my design workspace is embellished with all of these beautiful items, I'm hoping I will feel more inspired to work on my own projects over the next few months before Quilt Market. While Joel didn't make a list of personal resolutions, he and I did sit down New Year's Even to make some ambitious business-related plans for this year. I can't wait to receive our advance yardage of his Spring 2011 collection next month and get sewing! </span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-63862079814953374632010-11-30T12:37:00.004-07:002011-07-25T09:07:21.333-06:00Special Delivery!<div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Invitation_Box_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">For the past two years Joel and I have not been able to carry out one of our favorite Christmas traditions because we moved in early December each year. I know, not really the smartest planning on our part. However, now that we are settled, our Annual Gift Exchange party is on!<br /><br />The invitation shows this is our first annual party, but that's just because it's our first official one here in Utah. For three of the years we lived in Florida we threw a big Christmas party for our friends and had a blast each time as we planned a different theme. We are recycling this theme from our first year, but we think it's definitely worth repeating. So, here are the instructions for our guests:<br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: center; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);"><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">In this season of giving and holiday cheer,<br />We invite you to take part in a fun holiday tradition.<br />To gather as friends at the close of the year<br />And join in a game where you will really have to listen.<br /><br />An ordinary gift-exchange? Oh, we think not!<br />This present-swapping amusement has been changed just a little.<br />To avoid a battle over the packages brought,<br />The gift you leave with will be determined through riddle.<br /><br />So do your best to put into this box,<br />A 15-dollar item that would be something worth keeping.<br />A gift that is more unusual than a pair of socks,<br />And that won’t leave the recipients bitter and weeping.<br /><br />And for those with a desire to really impress,<br />Your added decoration to this box may win you a prize.<br />But, don’t worry, it’s not something over which to stress,<br />Just an added bonus for the couple who really tries.</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I'm excited to see how it all turns out. Now I've got to come up with a clever design for our box. Hmmm...<br /><br />How about you? What are your favorite holiday traditions?<br /><br /></span></div><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/gift_tag_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-65334026808714715962010-11-16T14:53:00.004-07:002011-07-25T09:07:53.628-06:00Bringing Up Girls<div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Brooke_embroidery_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;font-size:85%;" >Our daughter, Brooke working on a project for an art contest at school. She LOVES to embroider!</span><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">This post has been formulating in my brain for a couple of weeks now, but I keep putting it off for a variety of reasons. One of my reasons is that I wanted this post to be perfect; perfectly expressed words with perfectly edited photographs to illustrate what I’m saying and a perfectly designed downloadable pattern to include on the sidebar. But, I realized this “perfection” I’ve been waiting for is unrealistic with everything else we have going on and that this topic was too important for me to put off any longer.</span> <p face="trebuchet ms" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" face="trebuchet ms" class="MsoNormal">Joel and I have two daughters; two daughters who are both beautiful, both smart and both inherently unique individuals that we love dearly. We also have two amazing little boys, who I will probably write about at a later time, but today, my focus is on these precious, delicate (or sometimes not so much) females with whom we have been blessed to help teach, nurture and prepare to become beautiful, independent and, hopefully, confident young ladies and women.</p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal">For me, the responsibility of raising girls has seemed a bit more challenging than raising boys so far. Joel and I have had countless conversations discussing our parenting techniques and what we feel is most important for us to be teaching our children. We both feel a great deal of concern about the world in which our children, and especially our daughters, are growing up.</p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal">So, when I saw the book “Bringing Up Girls,” by Dr. James Dobson a couple of weeks ago at the library, I promptly checked it out, hoping his experience and wisdom would tell me exactly what I need to do to successfully raise my daughters to know of their intrinsic worth. He did just that. </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal">Nothing Dr. Dobson writes in his book is an entirely foreign idea to me. In fact, my parents instilled all these same values and moral standards in me as I was growing up. These values are also highly emphasized within the faith we practice. I grew up knowing I was a daughter of God and, as such, had high expectations for what I would accomplish in life, high expectations for the man I would one day marry and high expectations for the family I would one day create.</p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal">In his book, Dr. Dobson talks about the peril our girls face in our world today and that the lack of femininity in our culture that has resulted since the feminist movement of the 1960’s is partly to blame. He says,</p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"><span style=""> </span></p><blockquote style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">“Girls were considered far too passive, frilly, compliant, and motherly. That had to change. They needed to be taught to be aggressive, tough, tomboyish, unemotional, and, yes, much more masculine.”</blockquote><p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;"></p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal">He goes on to explain in the next two chapters and site research demonstrating why it is so important to not continue this trend. He mentions how what used to be mandatory homemaking classes taught in our schools, have mostly been canceled and “that America became the worse for it.”</p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal">So, after that long-winded introduction, I am finally getting to the main purpose of this post. I was one of those girls who, while growing up, did not always appreciate the lessons in femininity and homemaking skills my mother deemed so valuable. Sewing was one of those skills she tried her best to teach to an uncooperative teen-aged girl. I wish I had paid better attention now, but I’m quickly making up for my lack of interest then and am trying to learn all I can about the art of sewing.<br /></p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal">Two weeks ago Joel had the opportunity to speak to a group of educators from throughout the state of Utah. These women teach Family and Life Science courses at the middle school, high school and collegiate levels. At the conclusion of his presentation, several of the women came up to thank Joel for supporting their conference because they feel like what they are teaching is under attack of being removed entirely from the schools. One woman told Joel that Utah is one of the few states left where Home Economics courses are still taught in public schools. </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal">I would love to have attended the conference with Joel, but while he was there, I was undertaking an ambitious project of my own; teaching 11 girls between the ages of 8-12 how to sew. Not only was I teaching them how to sew, I was teaching them how to sew a project that may not have been the most suitable for the age group. However, all of them loved the experience and were so proud of what they accomplished. I’m grateful I had six other women there to assist with this frenetic activity. </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"> </p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">We sewed bags for carrying their scriptures to church. I gave them two designs to choose from (next time I will present one option!) and we spent one activity cutting out their bags and a longer activity sewing them. While it got a bit crazy at times trying to direct six different helpers and 11 girls how to complete the project, it was highly satisfying to use my talents in helping these girls see the value in sewing as a skill for them to learn.</span><br /></p><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Pink_tote_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Brown_tote_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><p></p> <p style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" class="MsoNormal">I don’t think every girl needs to learn the art of sewing (and neither does Dr. Dobson), but I do think it’s important to give our girls the opportunity. I want them to know that they can find great satisfaction in cooking, cleaning, sewing or any homemaking activity because all of these skills will be invaluable to them as mothers one day.<span style=""> </span>I want their femininity to shine through in everything they do, whether it’s playing goalkeeper in a soccer game, excelling in a science class or baking a cake. Sorry about that. Our minds are always racing with ideas to post here, but Joel has been preoccupied with designing a new spring collection, and I have been preoccupied with offering my two bits to the design process.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I did take a couple of hours the other day though to start decorating for Halloween. Ever since Joel came out with his first collection, I've have wanted to use his black and linen prints from the </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms; color: rgb(51, 153, 153);" href="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/Manzanita.html">Manzanita Collection</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"> for a Halloween project. It has only taken me four years to figure out what that project would be. I didn't end up using as much fabric as I originally intended, but I LOVE how these three frames turned out.</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/finished_art_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">If you would like to create these yourself, here are the supplies you need (for one frame):</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• 5" x 7" piece of Mat board</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• Utility knife</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• Cutting mat</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• Spray adhesive</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• 6" x 8" piece of fabric</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• 8 1/2" x 11" piece of muslin </span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• 8 1/2" x 11" piece of cardstock</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• Masking tape</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• Double-sided tape</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• Rhinestones</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• Hot glue gun and glue</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• Black painted and distressed 5" x 7" frame</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">• "Wicked Awesome" Font, by Rhonna Farrer (</span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms; color: rgb(51, 153, 153);" href="http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/shop/rhonna-farrer/69980-font-wicked-awesome/?filters=digital-kits-and-fonts%2Ffonts%2F_wicked_awesome_">download here</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">)</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Step 1:</span> Choose the image you want from the collection of fonts and size it to fit a 3 1/2" x 5" opening.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Step 2:</span> Tape the four sides of the piece of muslin to the cardstock. </span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 279px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/linen_taped_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:trebuchet ms;" >Step 3:</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Feed your muslin paper face down into an inkjet printer and print out your image. You may have to nudge the paper a bit for it to feed through properly. Cut your piece of muslin down to 5" x 7".</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 269px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Printed_muslin_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Step 4: </span>Measure a 3 1/2" x 5" box in the middle of your fabric piece 3/4" from each side and cut out. </span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 274px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/fabric_marked_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Step 5: </span>Use a utility knife to cut a 3 1/2" x 5" box in the center of your piece of mat board. Spray one side of the board with adhesive and place that side onto your piece of fabric. You should have about 1/4" of fabric remaining in the center. </span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Mat_board_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Step 6: </span>Spray the back side of your mat board with adhesive and fold the fabric over the sides of the board. You will need to cut a small diagonal slit at each of the inside corners to get the fabric to lay flat. You can also taper the outer corners to reduce the bulkiness there.</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Gluing_fabric_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Step 7: </span>Place a strip of double-sided tape along each side on the back of the mat board. Center the matting over your printed muslin image, then flip over to press the fabric into the tape.</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 557px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/double_sticky_tape_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Step 8: </span>Hot glue rhinestones where you would like on your image then you're ready to frame it! That's it. Pretty easy. You could easily turn this project into a decorative pillow or quilt square instead. </span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/beware_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">My favorite print of this collection was the black and linen Damask. Apparently that was a favorite for many people, as we still receive requests for this print almost weekly. Unfortunately, it's been out of print for a while now.<br /><br />However, we are thrilled to announced that a small collection of Joel's favorite prints, "Aviary II" will be available within the next couple of months and will include the black and linen Damask! You'll have to wait and see what other favorite prints are included in the collection and the new colorways, but the name of the collection should give you a hint as to another favorite that will be included.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Until then, we hope you're gearing up for all the holidays like we are. Isn't it so exciting? I love this time of year!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></span>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-61562807413029956782010-08-20T07:59:00.009-06:002011-07-25T09:11:30.367-06:00My Happiest Day<div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 558px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/temple_drawing_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Today Joel and I are celebrating our <span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);font-size:100%;" >thirteenth wedding anniversary</span>! I love this day because I'm always flooded with memories of the day we were married; it was my very favorite day. Ever. If I could choose one day out of my life to live over again, it would definitely be <span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">August 20, 1997</span> because everything about that day was perfect.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Joel has a remarkable ability to give really thoughtful gifts, and he has given me some incredible ones over the years. My absolute favorite though is the drawing pictured above of the temple where we were <span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">married</span>. He spent about three months secretly working on this while we were engaged, while we were both going to school full time, while we were both working, and while we were both trying to spend every spare second of extra time we had together. I have no idea where he found the time to complete it. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">When he surprised me with the framed drawing a few days before our <span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">wedding</span>, I was speechless. I'm embarrassed to say what I gave him because it was so lame in comparison. So I won't. I have tried, but never been successful at achieving his level of thoughtfulness or secrecy when giving him gifts.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I was so sure I had thought of the perfect gift to give him though this year. My excitement got the best of me on Sunday and I asked Joel if I could give him his gift early (I am no good at keeping a secret very long). He was a bit confused when I handed him an envelope, but when he pulled out the card inside emblazoned with the Apple logo on the front, his eyes immediately lit up. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">He's been patiently waiting for our wireless phone contract to expire so that he can FINALLY get an iphone. I wanted to give him the real phone, but had to settle for an iphone gift card after securing the real thing proved more difficult than I thought. It's unfortunate that it required so much effort on his part this week to order his phone. But, barring no further issues, he will soon happily join the throng of iphone aficionados.<br /><br />Joel doesn't spend much time anymore creating pieces of fine art, but his drawing skills are clearly evident in his fabric designs. Most of his designs are created first as sketches that he then refines on the computer. His Sparrow, Columbine, Damasks, Orchid, Antler Damask, Floral Drop, Sunflower, Handpicked Daisies, Majestic Oak, and Dogwood Bloom all began as large, hand-drawn designs that he then scannned into the computer. All of his other designs are a hybrid of sketching, photography and graphic design. It's a fascinating process to watch.<br /><br />In fact, I'm currently watching the process unfold again as he works on a new collection, and I can't wait to see the final product. And, like I do each time Joel creates anything, I'm sure I will <span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">fall in love</span> with his art and with him all over again.<br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">Happy Anniversary</span> to us!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /></span>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com23tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-2797763827643386162010-08-09T13:42:00.007-06:002011-07-25T09:13:01.610-06:00We Have Our Winner!<div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 432px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Bulletin_board_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Thanks for entering the contest and for all of your compliments on the baby blankets. The photo above shows the butterfly pattern I used from the book. We loved reading your comments about favorite baby gifts. I have to say it made me a bit nostalgic thinking about being pregnant with each of our children and remembering the thoughtful gifts we received. Like so many of you, mine and Joel's favorite gifts were those that were homemade. </span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /><br />When I was pregnant with our first son, we were given a quilt that my sister-in-law made with hand-designed blocks by friends and family members. For our first daughter, I was given a beautiful, creamy white afghan and a tied blanket my mom made with some fabric she bought while traveling in Japan. A good friend of mine wrote a beautiful poem for our second daughter, and without my knowing it, had Joel design artwork around the poem; it made me cry. And with our second son, I was given a handmade quilt, the designer of which didn't even realize she had sewn with some of my mother-in-law's fabric.</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /><br />But, enough of my meandering down Memory Lane. Now onto the primary purpose of this post; announcing our contest winner. We used random.org to select our winner; #117 <a href="http://quiltinginthepnw.blogspot.com/">Tracey</a>. Congratulations! We hope you enjoy your copy of "Sewn Spaces" and that the rest of you get a chance to look through the book at some point as well. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">P.S. As I was getting ready to post this, the doorbell rang and once I made my way through the tangle of kids fighting to open the door, I discovered a much-anticipated package: Modern Meadow prints that have been on back order since March! Yes, Joel and I have been waiting patiently for these to arrive, along with everyone else. Now, I can finally get to work creating with Dogwood Bloom and Picnic Plaid in the Pond colorway! Oh happy day. I hope this means that all of you who have been awaiting the arrival of these well-sought-after prints get yours soon as well.</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com29tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-90026257597725564502010-07-31T20:28:00.006-06:002011-07-25T09:14:40.636-06:00A Project Idea and a Giveaway<span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Before summer began, I had extremely grand ambitions of what work-related projects I would be able to accomplish during these school-free days. I had the crazy notion that having my kids home ALL day, EVERY day would somehow make it easier for me to get stuff done. I know. What was I thinking? Now that we’re already seven weeks into summer and I've only managed to complete one thing on my list, I’ve finally realized that I was a bit delusional. </span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">For over two months now I’ve been meaning to sew baby blankets to give as gifts for a couple of new additions to our extended family, but I didn’t get around to actually completing them until this week. I made one for our nephew born in June and one for our niece who will be born early this fall. (At least I’m ahead of the game for one of them.)</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 617px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Bird_blanket_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 617px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Butterfly_blanket_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Both the bird and butterfly appliqué patterns can be found in Joel’s new book, </span><a style="color: rgb(0, 204, 204); font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://www.amazon.com/Joel-Dewberrys-Sewn-Spaces-Projects/dp/0896899241">“Sewn Spaces.”</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"> I wasn’t sure the appliqué would work on the minky material, but both patterns worked beautifully, and I was really pleased with the result. </span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">If you would like to make one yourself, here are the instructions:</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /><br />1. Copy and size the patterns as desired.<br /></span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">2. Cut a 38” X 32” piece of both the printed fabric and the minky material.</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">3. Iron a piece of wonder under interfacing on the back of each fabric scrap you are using for the appliqué pieces; trace and cut out your pieces.</span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br />4. Peel the backing off of the wonder under and place your pattern pieces where you want on the minky material. Iron the pieces in place, being careful to not iron out the textured dots in the minky material.</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">5. Sew around each of the appliqué pieces using either a tight zig-zag stitch (as shown on the bird blanket) or an appliqué stitch (as shown on the butterfly blanket). </span> <span style="font-style: italic;font-family:trebuchet ms;" ><br />*I sewed the appliqué stitch about 1/8” from the edge of the butterflies to allow it to fray a little bit.<br /></span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">6. Thread an embroidery needle with three strands of floss (as shown on the bird blanket) or one strand of crewel wool (as shown on the butterfly blanket). Use a stem stitch to embroider both the butterfly antennae and the name.</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;font-family:trebuchet ms;" >*For stitching the name, I printed out the font I liked best and traced it onto the material.</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;font-family:trebuchet ms;" >* I found that embroidery floss worked much better than the crewel wool. But, if you're stubborn like me and love the aggravation of having to rethread your needle every 5 minutes, go right ahead.<br /></span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">7. With RIGHT sides together, sew around the edges of both the printed and minky fabrics, leaving about a 6” opening on one side to be able to turn the blanket.<br /></span> <span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">8. Turn the blanket and topstitch around the edge of the blanket about 1/2” from the sides.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">So, in celebration of the fact that I actually completed a project (or two) in spite of the fact that our kids interrupted me every 10 minutes while I worked, Joel and I are giving away one copy of his book, “Sewn Spaces.” If you would like to enter for a chance to win, leave a comment telling us your favorite baby gift to give, or receive. We’ll announce the winner on Monday, August 9th. </span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>Joel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com299tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-14687428742995593702010-06-30T10:47:00.007-06:002011-07-25T09:15:36.359-06:00The Ultimate Inspiration<span style="font-family:lucida grande;">In all our various roles, Joel and I are always seeking inspiration to do and be the best we can; this is why we decided to include the words "Live Inspired" at the end of every blog post. Inspiration comes in many different forms, is found in a variety of settings, and affects each person in a unique way. This past weekend Joel and I were inspired, in a WHOA kind of way.</span> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br /><br />We spent several days with our family in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming as we traveled throughout </span><a style="font-family: lucida grande;" href="http://www.yellowstone.net/">Yellowstone</a><span style="font-family:lucida grande;">. I've visited Yellowstone before, but for Joel and our children, this was their first experience. All of us were in complete awe of the beauty that surrounded us those four days. I told Joel that Yellowstone had moved into the first-place spot on my list of favorite places. Ever. (Okay, so I haven't been to that many places, but I'm pretty confident it would remain high up on my list even if I were a well-traveled individual).</span> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br /><br />The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. Everywhere. My favorite spot of all though was The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. We hiked down the lower falls lookout trail hoping for a good view of the waterfall. We didn't know it actually brings you right to the edge of the waterfall. It was a little bit freaky standing there with all that water plummeting 60 feet or so below us. </span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 547px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/yellowstone_canyon2_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 308px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Lower_Falls.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br />The Celestine Pool mesmerized us, until we found out several people have actually died in this spring. Maybe it looks just a little too inviting.</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 308px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Celestine_pool_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br />The views were incredible no matter where we drove. Whether it was tree-covered mountains, blackened forests (from the fire in 1988), or the travertine rock at Mammoth Springs, we were equally stunned by all of them.</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 610px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/trees_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/blackened_forest_Web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Mammoth_hotsprings_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br />The fact that there were active geysers and steaming holes all over the place, made Joel just a tad nervous thinking about just how active of a volcano the whole area is. I'd not recommend watching the movie 2012 before taking a trip to Yellowstone. </span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Old_Faithful_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br />The other thing we weren't expecting was to see so much wildlife. We knew we would see bison, but we weren't expecting them to be walking right in front of or to the side of our car. And, we definitely were not expecting to see a black bear foraging for food on the side of the road. We also encountered a bald eagle, swans, elk, coyotes and ospreys. </span> <div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Hello_bison_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 283px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/black_bear_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 283px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/bald_eagle_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br />We spent the last day of our trip <a href="http://www.yellowstonehorses.com/">horseback riding</a> through the mountains outside West Yellowstone. SOOOO fun! I loved the experience so much I thought about trying to convince Joel that we needed to buy a ranch one day (but then I thought about what winter would be like in southern Montana, and I decided I wouldn't make a very hardy rancher after all). </span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 275px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/DiamondPRanch_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br />Joel is about as far from being a cowboy as anyone could possibly be, but HOLY COW, doesn't he play the part well? I kept stealing glances at him the whole day like I was some infatuated school girl. He joked that he wore his city-slicker version of cowboy clothes that day; a Tommy Hilfiger button-up and Guess jeans.</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 615px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Hot_cowboy_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br />We were fortunate to have Joel's parents and niece and nephew visit us from Florida for this trip, making the whole experience that much more special. </span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 245px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/The_Family_BW_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br />I'm telling you, I would be in high heaven if I could ride through the mountains every day on a horse like this. It was the most serene, yet invigorating adventure. </span><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 605px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/Me&Kirsten_riding_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br />We had a hard time leaving such a beautiful part of the country. But, if I have any sway in the matter, we'll be going there again. Soon.</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><img style="width: 410px; height: 308px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/trail_ride_web.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div> <span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><br />We hope all of you will be just as inspired on whatever family vacations you have planned this summer. Take it all in and enjoy whatever beauty surrounds you.</span><br /><div style="text-align: center; font-family: lucida grande;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>eclecticmodernJoel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com33tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-47487639772952553862010-05-26T22:14:00.009-06:002011-07-25T09:16:15.737-06:00A Charming SettingJoel returned from Quilt market around 2:00 in the morning on Sunday. I think. I don’t know. I acknowledged his arrival with a kiss, but then rolled over to return to my blissful state of sleep. After four days of single-parenting, I was really tired. I shuttled kids around to Young Astronauts Club, Webelos Woods, piano lessons and two soccer games (one of which was hailed and rained upon the entire hour), spent an entire day sewing with my mom, spent two afternoons trying to clean the house after the kids tore through it like a tornado on the aforementioned sewing day and planned out the entire summer for keeping the kids entertained.<br /><br />Oh yeah. And my exhaustion may have had something to do with the fact that I woke up to screaming children about four times each night while Joel was gone and felt so displaced when the bed was empty next to me. I never get accustomed to sleeping by myself when Joel is away.<br /><br />Anyhow, I know Joel was exhausted also. He had worked late almost every night for a week leading up to his trip, and he NEVER sleeps well away from home (I guess he misses me just as much as I miss him). So, it was no surprise to me that he came home with a doozy of a head-cold that started to hit him his final day in Minneapolis.<br /><br />Aside from his illness, he was excited about the trip and having reconnected with many people in the industry, as well as with having made a lot of new connections. Since I’ve yet to experience quilt market in person, I plied him for every possible detail so I could vicariously walk the show in my mind. I can’t wait until the show comes close to home next spring in Salt Lake. I will DEFINITELY be there…in our own booth!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 617px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/placemat2.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br />Anyway, prior to the craziness that led up to Joel’s trip, I sewed some placemats for the Mother’s Day dinner we hosted for my mom. Joel took one with him to Market and dozens of you requested the pattern. I got the basic pattern idea from a placemat I saw at Anthropologie that “said” to me it belonged on my table. However, the $18 price tag told me differently. I decided to make my own and to add a bit of hand-embroidery to add a personal touch.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 383px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/embroidery.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/placemat_wood.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br />Joel thought I had lost my mind when I told him I was making 12 of them, and to be honest, I kind of thought I had too (I just wasn’t going to let him know that). They really came together quickly though and I found these placemats to be one of my most enjoyable sewing projects ever!<br /><br />We’ve added the pattern and instructions in the sidebar for you to download, if you’d like.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 273px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/cookies.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br />And, as promised, you can get the recipe for my irresistible chocolate chip cookies here. Enjoy some for me because I’m trying to avoid sugar for a little while…um, starting right after I make myself a cup of hot chocolate to warm up.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 631px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/CC_Recipe_card.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br />They say Utah will finally warm up tomorrow, but after the spring we’ve had, I am a bit skeptical. For those of you who visit next May, I hope the weather here is so much more inviting than at present.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>eclecticmodernJoel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6049034763884946874.post-10949293568121027472010-05-03T11:24:00.004-06:002011-07-25T09:16:41.318-06:00Coping Techniques<div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 272px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/blog/swedish_fish.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><br /><span style="font-family:lucida grande;">You know when I start eating Swedish fish in bulk-size portions that I'm stressed. It's not a good coping technique. I acknowledge this fact. I like to justify my actions though by thinking these bite-size pieces of goodness have some psychologically soothing effect on me.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:lucida grande;">We've had dozens of requests for the pattern of the skirt featured on our homepage. It's in the works, but guess who is working on it? Yes, that would be me, and I'm slow people. This is our first pattern, and it's taking me longer than I thought it would to get everything right.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:lucida grande;">It doesn't help that I volunteered to chaperone two field trips this week, and volunteered to head up the committee in charge of Teacher Appreciation Week, and volunteered to be a substitute pianist for one of our church meetings, but I did and the pattern has had to be put on hold. I think Joel has given up on trying to get me to say "no".</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:lucida grande;">I've also been a bit preoccupied by the fact that my parents will be returning home later this afternoon after having been in Samoa the past 18 months. Our family was living in Florida at the time of their departure, so it has been almost 2 years since we last saw them. We moved to Utah just 10 days after they left and lived in their home up until 5 months ago when we bought our own. After thirteen years of living far away from them, we will now be living less then a mile away from each other. Wow! I hope we don't drive each other crazy!</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:lucida grande;">So, I'm hoping to finish this project today (keep your fingers crossed). I'm currently testing the pattern to make sure that it works right, and that what I've designed won't frustrate the user into candy-eating binges like myself. If I could just get this blasted zipper to cooperate with me!</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:lucida grande;">So, Please tell me that I'm not the only one who gets a little (or a lot) frustrated by their creative projects at times. If you are feeling a little creatively challenged at the moment, might I suggest a bowl of Swedish fish?</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 65px;" src="http://www.eclecticmodern.com/ftp/signature.jpg" alt="alternative text" border="0" /><br /></div>eclecticmodernJoel and Laurie Dewberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04806451396305606029noreply@blogger.com19
